Damper Refurbishment (Repair/Fix)
We have seen information from various sources regarding the use of the small block chevrolet (SBC) timing seal with the stock Alpine vibration damper. At least one of these recommended epoxying the standard aftermarket SBC damper shaft repair sleeve onto a well cleaned Alpine damper.
Figure 1 shows the stock Alpine vibration damper complete with its damaged and worn spiral oil grove which measures 1.738 in.
Figure 2 shows a well worn SBC vibration damper whose journal measures 1.763 in. The SBC repair sleeve is a light press fit onto this diameter and measures about 1.760 ID leaving a clearance of about 0.022 in. when applied to the Alpine part. Epoxying the sleeve onto the Alpine damper without some form of proper alignment is asking for trouble. In the SBC shaft sleeves we have seen there is a coined area at the top which will help line up the sleeve but nothing is guaranteed. The proper way to do this is to knurl the Alpine damper to enlarge the diameter. Our knurling procedure increases the diameter by about .040 in. The knurled area is then turned back to 1.763 to provide a proper press fit for the SBC sleeve. This process ensures a minimum of eccentricity and proper retention of the sleeve.
Figure 3 shows the Alpine damper knurled and turned back to 1.763 in. diameter ready for the application of the SBC sleeve.
Figure 4 shows the SBC installed by a light press fit and the thread locker supplied with the sleeve kit. The damper is now ready for installation along with our billet timing cover.
What Not to Do:
Don't ask us to rescue a damper that looks like the one on the left in figure 5.
Figure 5 The damper on the right is the one we used for our testing and did show some decay of the rubber that separates the pulley from the hub. These rubber pieces are 45 to 50 years old now and their use puts your investment and your safety at risk. We highly recommend the purchase of a brand new vibration damper which comes set up for the SBC as manufactured and is available elsewhere on this site.
